Como una alternativa a los pesticidas químicos, paratransgenesis se basa en la transformación de bacterias simbióticas de un vector artrópodo para entregar moléculas que interrumpen la transmisión de patógenos. Durante más de una década paratransgenesis ha mantenido un esfuerzo basado en el laboratorio debido a las preocupaciones reglamentarias en materia de introducción de microorganismos transformados en el medio ambiente. Para facilitar la aplicación en el campo de las estrategias paratransgénicos, los enfoques de mitigación de riesgos que se ocupan de la contaminación ambiental y la propagación de genes deben ser desarrollados.
